How Window Tinting Laws Work?

I'm getting my windows tinted this week. I travel between three states frequently; Florida, Ohio, and SC. The three states have different tinting laws. My question is, does my tint have to be in line with all three states or just the state my car is registered in?How Window Tinting Laws Work?
I would think it would go by what state your car is licensed in. Alot of states require you to have both a front and rear license plate. I just drove from michigan to florida and back and i know a couple of those states have that law and in michigan you only need a rear plate and i didnt have any problem. But like the other person said i wouldnt be surprised if a cop stops you just to give you a hard time and look for other things to hit you withHow Window Tinting Laws Work?
In theory, I don't know.

In practice, it had better be or you can expect to be harassed in the states where your tinting does not comply. How Window Tinting Laws Work?
The cops have a million dollar gauge. Laws mean nothing to them. If the million dollar gauge says its to dark, then its to dark. You will be found guilty in a court of law and face up to a $5000 fine and 6 months in a correctional facility.
The State the vehicle is registered in.

Does home window tinting really help because I think I just wasted $1200 ???

I just had my whole house tinted with a dark shade tint that Vista tint offers and I dont think my house is any cooler yet. Besides making my house darker, I almost think it might have made my house hotter. Any advice would be appreciated because I think I just might have blown $1,200 for nothing. FYI, I have shutters on most of the windows in the house as well.Does home window tinting really help because I think I just wasted $1200 ???
Vista films can reduce the heat gain coming in through your windows by nearly 80%. This means the rom will take much longer to get as hot as it did without the film. It is also cutting nearly 100% of the UV. You may have an AC issue, since the warm air is not being removed. Check your cooling devices and air handler! VISTA Films are certified by the NFRC http://www.nfrc.org so there is no false advertising with this superior window film!Does home window tinting really help because I think I just wasted $1200 ???
I tried that tinted window film a few years ago on a large sliding glass door that faced the west. It did help some with the heat, but did make my kitchen darker. Hard to clean, too.

Keeping your house cool on hot days has alot to do with what kind of shingles you have on the roof and the color. We have black asphalt shingles and they absorb the heat, so if there is no breeze or heat and humidity is high, we don't leave our windows open.

While using the AC is really most comfortable, we only use ours on the really unbearable days. Instead we keep our furnace fan on 24/7. It brings the cooler air up thru the house from the lower level, and with our ceiling fans on low, we stay comfortable at 75 to 77 degrees. The AC is what really uses alot of electricity, but our bill is pretty nice with just the furnace fan and ceiling fans.

You will probably notice some difference in how cool you house stays with the window tints in a few more days. If

your house was hot when they did the windows, it probably will stay hot til the weather cools down some and you can open doors and windows to let the fresh cool air in before it turns hot again.

My aunt had tinted windows in her Florida house and she liked them cuz people couldn't see in her windows with the reflective quality to the outside. I don't know that it made her house any cooler, tho.

Did the company offer any kind of warranty or garantee with the product?Does home window tinting really help because I think I just wasted $1200 ???
no, it works...I lived in west Texas for a while, believe me, it works. Like others have said you might want to check all the other sources for keeping the cool in. the fact that they cut down on people seeing in your windows(except at night when your lights are on)is nice also.
Storm windows would have been much better. If the tint is reflective it has to help some. Plant some shade trees!

Question about window tinting for a truck?

I was wondering what the price range would be to get the windows of a truck tinted.

It's a 2006 Toyota TacomaQuestion about window tinting for a truck?
it depends on the windows, and quality of tint.

if only the front two windows 30-50

if the whole vehicle 100-250

Depends on where you liveQuestion about window tinting for a truck?
Depending on what's already tinted, between 50 and 125 dollars. If the back window and (if it's a 4 door) back doors are already tinted dark the expect to pay about 50-60 bucks for the front two. It may also be more or less depending on where you live. I live in Florida and recently paid 60 for the front two windows of my F-150.Question about window tinting for a truck?
Depends on what windows you are doing, what color, if its going to have mirror effect, how ark its going to be, ect.
The price will vary with how dark you get your tint as well, just call a couple local places and price check. If you get a limo tint, watch out, it takes some time getting use to how dark it is!

What is the definitive answer on Illinois window tinting laws on cars?

There is so much argument online, much of it around 2009. What is the current law? Can I see a link to something official? Thank you in advance. What is the definitive answer on Illinois window tinting laws on cars?
Here is part of the law. Yahoo won't let me give you the whole thing. Apparently people who use Y!A can't read anything for more than 2 minutes. Really easy to find at

in 2009 Illinois changed its tinting laws to allow drivers to have their windows tinted to a level they call 35% darkness all the way around the car. this is were the confusion comes from the first link is a news article about that change the second link lists the tinting laws for Illinois (2009 was the last time the law was changed )

How much does it cost for window tinting?

What is the cost for window tinting..the car is a 4 door 2010 accord sedan..

I want to tint the 4 windows and the back..location Irvine, CAHow much does it cost for window tinting?
I have a window tint business on the side and here in SAT, Texas I get $145.00 for it with manufacturer's lifetime warranty and I use High Performance Tint only. I know that it's slightly higher in CA, depending where you live.

Make sure to ask what brand they use. I strongly recommend 3M, or Madico. Both are well known not to turn purple. Stay away from brands like Gila or specially LLumar, which is known for turniung purple in less than two (2) years.

Note:

When applying tint to your auto glass make sure that you use a rubber squegee, not an applicator. Also, there is no need to to remove moldings or weather strip from your windows if the installer is a real professional. So I suggest not to drop it off or leave overnight. If possible, watch the installation.

Any auto tint priced higher than $225.00 on a 4 door car should be considered highway robbery.

Good Luck and Happy New Year!!
depending on the car and how many windows you are wanting to get tented and the percentage of the tint but an average shop for the honda is probably gonna run you about 45 to70 but it should have a warrantyHow much does it cost for window tinting?

I am looking to lease a 2009 Honda Civic EX coupe manual and i want to get black window tinting done to it.

How much would it cost for the dealership to do it?

And will the dealership do window tinting if i am leasing the car for 36 months?Window tinting a 2009 Honda Civic EX coupe?
I personally would not tint a car I'm leasing. Since you're just borrowing it, you don't want to throw extra money into it... right? You have to see if they'll allow it, they might not. Did you look over the contract, did it say anything about aftermarket/mods?

This is what I'd do. Go to your dealer, and see if they will throw it in with the lease or if they can do it for a tiny fee.Window tinting a 2009 Honda Civic EX coupe?
You should consider using a Dealer who is more than likely doing the car for that dealer who than doubles your price. By the way FormulaOne Tinting will remove that tint from a leased vehicle at no charge to take the worry away. Check http://www.formulaOne.com

Is it cheaper to have window tinting for my car done in the winter?

what should i expect to pay for a small 4 door sedan? Is it cheaper to have window tinting for my car done in the winter?
I would expect to pay about $100.00 more or less. I would hold off though. Having your car tinted in the winter is probably not a good idea. Remember tint is applied with some sort of glue and cold weather slows the process down and you need time for it to dry not to mention the air bubbles that can be created. Best thing to do is wait till it's warm and plan to leave your car alone for a good part of the day so it can dry. The only way I would do it is if the car would be indoors out of the weather until the job is finished.
anything you do off season is usually cheaper and if its not advertised at a cheaper rate .. you are in a good position to negotiate.... especially if there is more than one thing you want done to your vehicle. Is it cheaper to have window tinting for my car done in the winter?
no its cheaper to do it yourself than a profesional

just buy the rolls alrealy cut to the size of your window
about $75. anytime is good as long as the weather is warm.Is it cheaper to have window tinting for my car done in the winter?
about $120...and the season won't make a difference...i had my mazda pro5 done all 4 windows and the rear window for $120...i wouldn't think you'd pay more then that....if you shop around you can probably do it for around $90
No it still takes the same amount of material and labor and check your State Laws about legal tints.

Are cars sold with window tinting?

you don't get pulled over for factory tint as it's not that dark. Are cars sold with window tinting?
Just to let you know, tinting is an offer given to your car, rather than of coming together with the car itself. Original windows NEVER have tints, so tinting layer is offered to you by salespeople as an after-sales "free gift".Are cars sold with window tinting?

Where can i find a good car-window tinting business in/around portland oregon?

It's been several hours since you asked this question so...

if you are still looking for an answer :

    http://portland.citysearch.com/yellowpag鈥?/a>

Above is CitySearch's results for "Portland Window Tinting". I'm assuming you aren't necessarily looking for a personal recommendation so I can offer you their results.

CitySearch's highest rated company for auto tinting is 'Auto Glass Solutions'

    http://www.auto-glass-solutions.com/quot鈥?/a>

    1-877-770-8110

    info@auto-glass-solutions.com

That is their contact information and it looks like they have at least two locations in Portland. They do mobile tinting and have good reviews (see CitySearch). As far as personal tinting experience, I would rather take my car into a shop that has a closed-in environment so they can thoroughly clean and do the best job regardless of weather. Either way there's a couple of options.

Also, when you are thinking about tint grade, if you don't have much experience here's a little advice. Oregon allows only 35% (+/- 3%) all the way around so you'll want to take that into consideration. However, 35% really isn't very tinted, in my opinion. So if you are considering going darker you can easily find a shop that will. Call around and just directly ask for pricing for the tint percentage you want and you'll get a quote from someone. Here in Denver it's 70/30% legal but the first shop I called did 5% for side windows and 10% rear (what I asked for) for $300.

Make sure the company that does your tint offers a good warranty and they should also be able to show you examples of cars they've done in the past (the best shops have pictures updated after a certain amount of time).

Do understand, the local police department has the absolute and final authority regarding tint-limit-enforcement. You can be pulled over and ticketed. I've even heard horror stories about a$$hole cops who carry around tint-removal kits in their squad cars. In TN my friend got ticketed and the only way he didn't have to pay the ticket is to get his tint removed and prove it to the court. So take all that into account. From direct experience I've never been pulled over and my tint level has never even been questioned and I'm 65% below the limit. But know the risks if you plan on going 10% or lower below the legal limit.

    Good luck.

How to get rid of ruined window tinting, the top layer was easy to pull of ,but there seems to be second layer?

the best thing I know is a hair dryer, and a good razor bladeHow to get rid of ruined window tinting, the top layer was easy to pull of ,but there seems to be second layer?
If removing tinting from home windows, you can use a single edge razor blade and water or glass cleaner as a lubercant to scrap the tint and glue away. If using on auto glass scrap with the curveature of the glass. If trying to remove tinting from rear windows in an auto make sure that it doesn't have heating elements across the window. If it does have heating be very careful not to cut the brass elements.

P.S. Please use a handle to hold the blade to prevent cutting yourself. Can be found at Wally WorldHow to get rid of ruined window tinting, the top layer was easy to pull of ,but there seems to be second layer?
I have sprayed Amonia onto the residue then stuck newspaper to it and sprayed it again to keep the paper wet. It disolves the glue and makes it easier to scrape off.

There are many different film solutions for this issue. One easy method is to have a dealer install an opaque film, dusted crystal, etc. This would allow light in but prevent outside to inside observation.

LLumar has several types of film to match your aesthetic requirements and they are certainly warranted.

There are so many high-tech coatings and films now I can't keep up with them all. check with window companies and automobile window tinters.
Depending on the window... you may be able to use automotive window tint film or spray tinting... Double-glazed windows can be damaged if you tint them though.

Its best to call in a professional due to the differences in windows today. 30 years ago double glazing was rare in homes and the tinting films were almost always the way to go.

I would consider having the exterior of the window frosted. (etched with acid to turn it white) or putting up a frosted glass panel inside of the existing glass.Home window tinting for privacy?
COOL. I WAS ACTUALLY THINKING THE SAME BUT I THOUGHT IT WASN'T APPROPRIATE FOR MY WHOLE HOME. THE BATHROOM IS A DIFFERENT DEAL. I SAW IN SKYMALL THEY HAVE A FILM THAT LETS LIGHT IN AND BLOCKS OUTSIDE VIEW. THEY COME IN DIFFERENT PATTERNS , STAINED GLASS, CLOUDS ETC. IM THINKING ABOUT GETTING IT.
I had a company come to tint every window in my home. They pick up the warranty on the windows and the tint for the life of your windows. I'm glad I did, too. My double glaze windows began to have condensation between the panes and they had no problem replacing the window and retinting. I love the energy savings and the privacy the tint affords and it was worth every penny I paid to have it done. The only minor inconvenience is that you cannot clean the tint with any ammonia based product as it will haze the tint. But, finding vinegar based window cleaner is no big deal. I don't advise doing this job yourself if you are still under a warranty on your original windows because tinting it yourself voids it.

  • Why is auto window tinting so difficult?

I've attempted to do mine several times but it just doesn't work. There's always some dust and bubbles and rough cuts. Why is auto window tinting so difficult?
Every tint shop has its own tricks to a clean cut and application, and most places have customers bring their cars to them, so they can ensure they apply the tint in a clean, dust-free environment. Make sure to wash the windows beforehand, and don't do it outside!

Alternatively, consider paying a professional to do it for you. It might be more expensive than doing it yourself, but at least it'll be done right. If you're going to have the vehicle for a while, make sure you ask what warranty they offer - a high quality film should come with a lifetime guarantee!

How hard is it to put window tinting on my car?

What are the regulations, is it worth getting it professionally done and how much do you think it is?

Any reccomendations is also appreciated. How hard is it to put window tinting on my car?
It is definitely worth having it professionally done. Most windows now are not just flat pieces of glass, and with the curves on them, tint needs to be cut a specific way to make sure it ends up fitting properly after installation. By the time you pay for the tint you need for a self install, it is just not worth the aggrivation to do it yourself, and if you mess it up, which is easier to do than most people imagine, you need to go pay more. Cost will depend on where you are, but for installed tint, you should not expect to pay more than $150-200 for most cars, and less than that in some areas.
I totally agree with Rafael. You can drive around and see which tint jobs are done by amateurs - they just look crappy. I had my last car done by LA Tint and it looked great for all the years I kept the car. If I wanted this done, I would definitely NOT do it myself. How hard is it to put window tinting on my car?
I would suggest you have it done professionally, Before you do, check with your state laws regarding window tint. Some states have a minimum visibility percentage where they can actually check it with a meter designed for this. It is usually done during your annual state vehicle inspection, if it doesnt meet regualtions, your vehicle doesn't pass inspection and you must remove it. Also, some states do not allow tint on the driver's or passenger side window or on the rear windshield. As I stated earlier, check with your state's laws regarding window tint. I have had the displeasure of failing a vehicle inspection due to window tint, the customer got mad, but its my inspection license and a stiff fine if I do not follow the regulations and get caught.
Go to a shop that specializes in window tinting. Look in the phone book under Automobiles then go to window tinting. Look for a shop that guarantees their work and don't be shy about asking how long they have been in business and for references now, not references two or three days later. To attempt to do it yourself will cost you money and at best result in a poor job.How hard is it to put window tinting on my car?

How much is a fair price to have automobile window tinting professionally done?

I dont know about where you are but, in San Diego, I had a company called Solar Tint come to my office and do all seven windows (rear, two small rears, two back door, two front door) at 90% of limo for $200.... with a lifetime warranty on the tint. They did a really good job and I would highly recommend them if they're nationwide, but I dont know if they are. Whoever you go with, just watch out for shops that use low quality tint or that wont guarantee their work for at least three to five years.

EDIT- To the guy with the urgan legend about the cops with razor blades... Its legal in all 50 states to tint any windows except the front two door windows and front windshield. Most states will let you get away with the front doors too but its illegal in some... In CA, its illegal to have it done technically but I've never been bothered about it and every car I've ever had has had the fronts tinted along with the rears. How much is a fair price to have automobile window tinting professionally done?
It depends on where you live--the price varies by area as does the legality of having tint.

However, if you live in a more open-minded state call around and get some prices. Or you can try it yourself. I have done several cars, 2 trucks, and an RV. I like to work with the tint that has the metal layer--it is so much easier to work with. More expensive, but well worth it.

Buy a good sized roll on ebay, that way you will have some to practice with. I tinted a whole RV just recently (and there are a lot of windows in those things) for $25.00.How much is a fair price to have automobile window tinting professionally done?
You have to shop around--it varies by degree of tint and about how long it will take---it is illegal in most places--in New Jersey the cops carry razor scrapers and make you take it off on the side of the road--or they can just give you the ticket. How much is a fair price to have automobile window tinting professionally done?
depends but you should be able to get it done no more than 180..it can be expensive depending on your car (make, model, number of windows)
It depends on which shop/location you go to, here in central CA ive seen many shops with signs that says FULL TINT $100. Hope this helps

Does window armor work better than any other tinting place?

has anyone ever went there for their car?

It says that it can protect from theft protection %26amp; harmful uva rays I'm just wondering if it's a good place to get my windows done.

I really need to get my windows tinted but was thinking about this place but a little unsure at the moment.Does window armor work better than any other tinting place?
I'd be careful. The thicker security films designed for cars are effective but seriously you only need this in a high crime area. The average solar control car film will provide impact protection for side collisions, etc and the cost is considerably lower.

This sounds like he is stepping his boundaries. Police officers have proticall they have to follow to what the law allows them too. Police officers can NOT do what ever they want, even though people think this. If he wrote you a ticket look up the cvc code. After you thoroughly read the law hopefully it address what is to be done if you are issued a ticket like this. I would be surprised if any where in this code section it gives an officer the power to take the fix in his hands like he did.

What is Solar Window Tinting exactly in Ford vehicles?

That would be what is known as "smart film" and is not currently available. There are obviously smart glass like sun glasses that get lighter or darker. The issue is transferring that process on wider webs and thin film, Research Frontiers is working (and has been) on this for years. So far not commercially available.

The films of tinting paper you get at autozone. Could they be used on tail lights to give it a smoked look?**Self tinting film** Could window tinting film be put on tail lights to give it a smokey look?
if u want a smoked look for your tail light you could take them to a local auto paint shop. tell them u want to tint them. they could tint them to a black out or just a very light tint.depending on how dark you want them. how they do this is they paint your tail lights with a desired amont of black and clear-coat.

it works me and like all of my friends did it last year in auto body and paint class.

    I wouldn't

    1. it's not safe

    2. it's not legal

    3. it will come off in a few days.

    But hey, that's just me.
The curved areas would NOT hold the tint well at all!!!! Air, dust, water, ect. ect would get on the edges and no matter what you would do. it will peel off and look HORRIBLE! Certainly not a good idea! Plus your guaranteed to get harrassed by cops!**Self tinting film** Could window tinting film be put on tail lights to give it a smokey look?
I once purchased a 1987 Firebird Formula with tinted tail lights. Look cool! But, after the third time in an hour, seeing in my rear view and hearing the screeching of tires from the car behind me when I decided to slow down they were hastily removed and discarded in the trash of the next gas station.

Can you recommend a good Los Angeles window tinting shop for my brand new Magnetic Gray Toyota Prius?

I'd also like to get an alarm put on her and I know that some places do both. I just want to be sure that both services are top notch. Thanks. Can you recommend a good Los Angeles window tinting shop for my brand new Magnetic Gray Toyota Prius?
You may want to ask a more local Prius owners' group:

    http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Bay_鈥?/a>

It's really more CA-wide than just the Bay Area, though.

Other places where you may get some recommendations:

    http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Priu鈥?/a>

    http://www.priusonline.com/

    http://www.priuschat.com/

You really want to go with the factory alarm, rather than some aftermarket thing. Some aftermarket alarms do not play nicely with the Prius' electronics.

All North American NHW20 Prius actually have the alarm (lights blink and horn beeps if a door/hood is opened while armed), just that the alarm is only turned on/accessable in certain option packages (it's a software thing). Some people have been able to get a dealer tech (who would have the necessary Toyota handheld tester needed to change the software parameter) to turn it on for free, or for just the labor charge, when asked nicely... Otherwise, you may have to get the RS3200 VIP "upgrade" which is basically the additional glass breakage sensor (microphone tuned to the sound of breaking glass, sets off the alarm) plus the tester instructions for turning the alarm on. Call around to different dealers and ask for pricing.

While you're calling the dealers for the alarm pricing, also ask them who they recommend for window tinting, and their pricing. Can you recommend a good Los Angeles window tinting shop for my brand new Magnetic Gray Toyota Prius?

Is professional car window tinting a diff material or process than buying the tint and doing it yourself?

Apparently to get my cars windows professionally tinted in the back and trunk windows its $200. Is it the same material that I can buy at any store for like 20$ and they just put it on "professionally"? Like is it worth getting professionally done is my question, because my brother is a mechanic and he said he could do it for me, I just need to buy the tint, but if its a cheap material that peels off then I dont know if its worth it.Is professional car window tinting a diff material or process than buying the tint and doing it yourself?
Technically the answer to your question is no. The materials are different. What you get in the local parts house is a very very thin tinted material. It requires extremely careful handling so as not to crease it. As was mentioned the cleaning of the glass makes all the difference too.

The materials from a professional window tinting firm is a little thicker and is multilayered to give a better surface to prevent scraching.

I have had at least 25 different cars tinted living here in AZ. The difference in the job I could do and the job the professionals do is well worth the $200 plus at the reputable dealers you get a lifetime guarantee on the work and materials.

    Hope this helped.
Yes the 20.00 film is much thinner, cheaper - harder to work with/

The pro's use the best quality film and it is an art form.

Not everyone can do it, and make it look good.

200.00 aint bad if you get a warantee, and there are no blemishes.

I assume you have rear defrost??Is professional car window tinting a diff material or process than buying the tint and doing it yourself?
I think professional window tinting is actually a special coating that they spray onto the windows.

Whereas the stuff you buy in shops is just a stick-on transfer. It's basically the cheap-*** alternative.

It's the fake tan of window tinting :P
Its really difficult to put it on yourself. I bought the material for $20 and then just gave up with it. I kept getting bubbles and it never turned out the way I wanted it to be. When you go to "professionals" they use a different material and it looks 10 times better. I think you can find a better deal than $200Is professional car window tinting a diff material or process than buying the tint and doing it yourself?
    not at all.
It is the same stuff. The real difference is the way they prep the window by cleaning it first. They often use alcohol swaps to make sure the glass is clean first. Most people are so interested in getting the tint installed they fail to properly clean the glass first.

A fresh razor blade will take the tint off and then a wax and grease remover will take the glue off. Save yourself some trouble and have a window tint shop remove it. It will cost no more than $20 per window.
Try a hair dryer. When it starts to curl up, peel it off. If that doesn't work, try

get single edge razor blade open door and start to work ever so slowly and corner nearest the interior at bottom edge/ just push easy an go along the the whole front of glass a little at a time until you can lift that portion slightly/this takes patience and a little skill/if you do it right you will be able to pull a large portion of it off in one piece//you have to work the edge
I wet paper towels with ammonia and lay them on the tint for 2 hours and mine came of fairly easy starting at the corners using a razor blade being careful not to get ammonia on anything else and also not scratching the window with the blade it is best to do this on a hot day and keep the paper towels wet with ammonia . To get the excess glue i used simple green then WindexHow do you get window tinting off the windows in your car?
scrape it off with a straight edge razor blade and then the glue backing is left and that's the real fun part, I use engine degreassor to spray on the glue and the razor blade to get it off.
use a razor blade, heat, and a special chemical if needed. Its better to go to a tinting center to remove it since they do it all the time.

I have already pulled off the tint, but what is a good way to remove the sticky layer behind the tint? How do you remove window tinting from your car?
    The best way lists below

    Side windows

With a razor (make sure the razor is new) start at a corner then peel back film slowly, if film rips use the razor again to start after film is removed. There will be glue residue and the best way to remove this is to wet the glue with some soapy water, keep the glue wet and scrape it with the new razor, if you have any type of defogger or antennas do not use a razor!! seek professional help and allow a Tint Shop to remove your film

    Rear windows

We use a plastic bag, clean the outside of the window then wet the window with soapy water, place the bag on the outside of window and make a template then wet the window inside. Transfer the bag to the inside of the window covering all of the rear glass. This works best in the hot sun, leave on for a half hour then try to remove film. Do not use a razor on defogger lines. If you cannot remove film this way, you can also use a steamer and steam the window, if that doesn't work take it to a Tinting Shop. You can also try cleaning glue off rear windows by spraying glue with a foam glass cleaner and let it soak for 5 mins then try to remove it with a cloth or email us for more information.

I heard that when the car is tinted and the windows are used, it leaves scratches. Is this true and if so are the scratches bad and that noticable?Window tinting on a Mercedes C240? Scratches left on window?
Some are noticeable. At the dealership I work at, to prevent

the tint from becoming scratched, we cut a small strip off the

inside window weatherstripping, the part that rubs against

the inside glass when the window goes up and down.Window tinting on a Mercedes C240? Scratches left on window?
If the tint film is poor quality, it may become scratched, but the glass is quite durable, and won't be harmed by the film. It is more likely to be scratched by an inexperienced person using a razor scraper to remove the tinting in order to re-tint (or just get rid of the tinting). If the car is used, and has been re-tinted badly, scratches will show up as very fine light lines in all directions.

Cheap garbage Dyed film: DIY or tint shop- Turns purple quickly. around $100

High Performance Films- Dyes- Metals mixed. Various types but expect to pay $125-179

All Metal: Careful there are laws against reflectivity like a silver film. Best metal film is Ultimate Stealth technology low reflective- These price around $225+

Top of breed: Ceramic Films like Pinnacle. Figure $250-300+

Window tinting all depends on where you go. If you go and buy the "do it yourself" kit from any auto store, it will run about $50, because you need some tools to actually do it yourself.

A decent shop will normally charge about $75 per window ( on average from what I have seen) though.

Also remember the legal limits of tint on your car. Everywhere will make you sign a waiver if you go below the states legal limit.

Remember also that you cannot tint your windshield below that little "A" on the windshield!
you ahve to have it done by a pro shop but you also have to follow the law for tinting windows in your stateHow much could i expect to pay for window tinting?
depends where you are, here in New Jersey it's around $150.00
4 door car and rear window = 250.00 out the door.

    Reguardless of darkness.

How hard is window tinting REALLY?

does anyone have any success stories to share? i'm looking at cheap, pre-cut for my car window tinting sheets on ebay and they're about %26lt; 1/4 the cost of getting it professionally done. in consideration of cost, is tinting yourself worth it?How hard is window tinting REALLY?
We do this for a living and no matter how good you are 1) the tint you buy at a local auto supply store or Wal Mart is dyed and bubbles and chages color (purple)

    2. The technique by experts (ME) is to heat shrink the rear window using a heat gun and with the liner on reversed on the rear window. This gets the shape of the compound curved window. No one has wet shrinked for the last decade!

Spend $150 or less and get it done right with a lifetime warranty. Remember you buy cheap-you buy often!

    Check http://www.formulaone.com or http://www.llumar.com
You get what you pay for.....window tint may look like something simple to put on....but its not. My friend decided to be cheap and put his own on....and it bubbled. My aunt had the same problem with hers. Just cough up the extra money now and get it professionally done, and not later when you have to pay someone to take the crap that you put on off.How hard is window tinting REALLY?
If you really want your windows tinted pay to have it done. Trust me is frustrating, you deal with bubbles, wrinkles, door panels removal and installation, some times it takes more than one person, you even have to keep an eye on the weather. I have tried it before and ended up taking it to have it professionally done.
be careful different states have laws concerning the tinting of window glass. the tint comes in different densities and some will not pass state inspectionsHow hard is window tinting REALLY?
I have tinted windows a few times, and honestly it seems like it is hit or miss. First it depends on the car you have, I think jeeps and SUV's are considerably easier as the back window usually isn't on much of an angle. If the tint you buy is to cheap it will be hard to put down. I always got my at an automotive store. Finally you have to make sure you use just the right about of liquid, if you don't it will be hard to get all the bubbles out. My advice, practice first, see if you can go to a tint shop and ask for old scraps, if you are comfortable go for it, it will cost you alot less!!
Yeah. Lots of people do their own tint.

The best way is to bring a helper (for those biiiig, curved windows-to help ya get the tint stuck on without wrinkling it and to help smooth out the air bubbles.).

Start with a CLEAN window. REALLY clean. Clean it with a non-ammonia cleaner and then scrape the entire window with a single-edged razor blade. (Mind the defroster wires on the back window).

The trick is to thoroughly soak the tint glue side with a mix of warm water with just a couple drops of dish soap in it.

Spray the window you just cleaned liberally (really get it soaking wet) and have your helper grab one end of the tint material to help you position it on the window.

Keep spraying the window/tint while you are doing this.

Apply one end of the tint nice and straight to the window and spray the non-glue side liberally with the water mix. Take a soft rubber squeegee and while spraying both sides of the tint, smooth it onto the window while pushing the air bubbles out from underneath with the squeegee.

Don't over squeegee-it'll cause scratches in the tint.

Once you've got the tint on to your satisfaction and all the trapped air out from under-spray it all down and LET IT DRY.

Leave the windows up for the recommended time (important).

After everything has dried and set up-bum some clear nail polish from your lady friend and lay down a thin coat along any edges that come in contact with rubber gaskets and let it thoroughly dry. This will keep the edge of the tint from getting caught in the gaskets when the windows fog up (possibly loosening the glue) and causing the tint to get ripped off the window.

The trick with application is to keep everything soaking wet on all sides til it's positioned right and smoothed down. Keeping it all wet also lets you slide the timt some if you need to make small positioning adjustments. Don't let the glue side dry even a little bit until it's exactly where you want it. Then the thing is to LEAVE it alone for a few days (warm weather is best, but you can use any hot air blower on the glass side to speed things up a bit.) to completely bond and seal to the window.
Its really easy to do, however it is almost impossible to do well. My advice would be to get somebody who knows what they are doing to do it for you.

    Ja.
i know several people who have tried to do it themselves and it always turns out looing like crap, or the tint looks purple or something, or it just doesnt last and starts peeling after a few months, i have had all my none tinted windows done professionally on a few different vehicles and i have always been happy, the way i look at it its a one time fee pay it let it be done right, then thats it, you dont have to take out a loan or anything to have it done, i recomend to let the folks who know what they are doing do it
It is actually quite hard and time consuming, you have to be very patient to prevent bubbles and wrinkles. It is hard enough that a lot of people take out the window, tint it, then reinstall the window.
Its not that hard. Just make sure you get all the bubles out or you will have problems down the road. It might take you a couple times before you are perfect.
if you have a lot of time on your hands where you can play all day getting air bubbles out of the tint and have a lot of patience go at it, I did it on my 67 chevelle and it turned out great but it took me a couple of days to do it and I didn't buy the pre fit panels, I cut them all by hand.
it's not that easy, i've had success and i've had bad failure. Theres more to it than just sticking it to the window
It's not really that hard in most cases. It mostly takes alot of patience. All you really need is a box knife, tape, windex, and a squeegee of some sort. A blowdryer would be optional. But if you aren't confident then just take it to any stereo or tint shop. Shouldn't cost you more than 100 bucks.
not that tough1ce u get e hang of it... 1st u need a long dish... fill w h2o n 3-5% dish liquid... clean e wind screen... cut e tint to size w some extras (u need that for sizing in later... spray e screen w h2o... roll up e tint n submerge in dish than tear of wax paper backing... this way u wldnt risk ving e tint sticking 2gether... check screen 2 c its wet.. remove tint fr dish n roll it over e screen... position... n squeeze out water btw screen n tint (u will need a squeegee-e hard rubber kind so it wldnt scratch e tint) squeeze h2o fr centre out... than trim 2 size w abt 3 mm extra all round so that u can stuff it under e rubber gasket of e windscreen...

Do police really care about illegal window tinting?

I live in oregon and the tinting laws are 35%. But if I went around 20-25% would the police even notice/care? Has anyone been pulled over for illegal tints? I just dont want a ticket.Do police really care about illegal window tinting?
yes they care, and the ticket is expensive, not to mention the cost of removing the tinting - which always looks like s_____ after removal; and you are totally out the cost of the tinting. So basically, you'll pay 2X to 3X of the tint job to have it, pay the ticket and remove it.Do police really care about illegal window tinting?
Police should all be issued Tint sticks or something similar, it's got a color chart of all the tints.....or they just got a sample of the Minimum ILLEGAL tint, so they press it against your window and compare to see if your windows are darker than the small sample piece they have.

They CANNOT ticket your for illegal tint unless it IS illegal.

They MUST prove it, and be able to prove it.

If you get wrongfully ticketed for it, and your 100% sure of this.

If the law is 35% and you got 25% and get ticketed for it.

Just get a sample of 35% tint from a dealer or shop, then bring it to court with you, along with a receipt or paperwork proving it's 35% tint.....you could also bring someone who knows tint too....if you got a friend from a car customs place,etc.....

Some cops are idiots and DONT know tint laws......so it doesn't hurt to get a tint-sample palette or something with all the different tint colors....(it's a small handheld piece)Do police really care about illegal window tinting?
yes but if u are mostly in mid-class neighborhoods with ur vehicle u would prob be ok especially if there are not many teens in ur area. if u are in the south it is legal in most states

I have been an auto tinting professional for over 10 years, and I have never heard of Viper tint. It may be a cheap manufacturer. Tinting your car is an investment, I would suggest sticking to high quality brands such as Madico.

    Commercial window tinting options?

I am trying to find out if there is a product available to tint existing skylights. I work in an office with many, many skylights that line the entire ceiling and the glare is killing us. we are looking into options for window tint. Does anyone know of any product that can be painted on that would still give a translucent, tinted look? Or is the tinted film the only option? Any suggestions would be really appreciated.Commercial window tinting options?
There are many window film product solutions for skylights. It would be helpful to know if your skylights are glass or made out of a polycarbonate material like Lexan? For your question let's assume it's made of glass.

You can install a highly reflective film like 20 Silver- CP Films -LLumar has this type of film as do almost all film manufacturers. This will knock down the glare and heat. Check http://www.vista-films.com for a local dealer You can also have a translucent film opaque for example installed for more diffused light. If the skylight is polycarbonate- a vinyl version of this film is available.

The next question is access to the glass. If ladders or scaffolding is required the labor cost would be higher. I'd stick with a film since the pain will heat up and eventually fail. The window films are warranted for a decade or more and they also will cut your cooling costs and 99.9 % of UVA and UVB which have been linked to skin cancer issues.

Home Depot and Lowe's both sell a UV blocking window film. It is easy to install, just clean your windows, spray them so they are wet, put the film on %26amp; squeegy the water out. I cut mine close to the right size, then trimmed them to fit once I had them up. Amazing how much this helps my AC bills.

70 percent tint means 70% light must be able to pass through? if so, how light of a tint would it be?Window tinting?
70% is VERY light. the lower the number, the darker the tint. ill tell it like this. here in NC, window tint is checked every time a car is inspected. the legal limit (darkest it can be) is 32%. if its lighter than 65%, we count it as not having tint. i usually find about 40% is pretty good darkness. hope that gives you a fair gauge to go by.Window tinting?
I've never heard of tint that light. I don't know if that little tint would be worth the money spent. Go to a tint shop and see all the samples. Then you can compare and also see what the legal limit is.Window tinting?
before you tint, check your state laws for the # tint you are allowed.

    1. What is the best solution to use when applying to the car window before you put the film on?

    2. What is the best temp. to do this in.

    3. What is the best device to use to push all the bubbels out?Window Tinting?
    1. Any soapy solution (you might notice residue at first but that will go away)

    2. Most likely as cool as possible

    3. A squeegee and hair dryer or industrial heat gun to remove bubblesWindow Tinting?
just wanted to add a tip for you,

go over it w/hair dryer(not to close)

this will help get out the bubbles.Window Tinting?
I used a "Tint On" solution sold in a bottle near the window tints at auto parts stores. But I believe any soapy solution is ok. I like to use a silicone squeegee to get most of the solution out, then go over with a credit card wrapped in a soft cloth, and push really hard.

Do it in a cool temperature, otherwise the solution will dry up on you too fast. I think you will inevitably be left with a few bubbles you cannot push out, just pop them with a small pin, and try to push them out the small pin hole.

I've found the hardest part is trimming the edges, I like to do it with the window down a little to start, get the top done and trimmed the roll the window the rest of the way up. If you can I recommend removing the window glass. It will make it so much easier because you can do it on a table and get the edges trimmed perfectly.

These are my tips, and my window tinting comes out pretty good, most people ask me where I got it done because it looks nice. If you can get good at tinting yourself, you can put the window tint shops to shame as they sometimes don't do very good work, and sometimes will damage your weatherstripping.
why dont u go to the place and get it done?

    Window tinting?

When i bought my car it already had the windows about 35% but i want them darker....will it be cheaper to get it darker or will they have to stip the old off or can they put a lighter layer on it so they mix to make it darker???

    Thanks!!Window tinting?
If you came into my shop wanting me to put tint over tint the first thing I would say to you would be...

If I do that you get no warranty whatsoever because I cant garauntee the job that was done before me ...

also... Im very good at what I do and take pride in my work so I wouldnt want to have to follow someone elses edge at the top of the window... i like to tuck mine all the way to the top...

So no I dont want to tint over your tint

... just read that you had a car... there is no way i'm tinting over your back glass, unless I check that car out and that back window is immaculate

    ....

As far as how dark you should go, i'm a huge fan of %20 it gives you a nice charcaol look, and its still light enough the nice police officer can see you and hopefully not give you a ticket for it.

again.... no I dont want to tint over what you have on there now....

I offer a lifetime warranty on my installs.... thats part of what you pay for... would hate to see you pay all that money for tint and if something went wrong in the near or distant future there would be nothing I could do about it.Window tinting?
They will place the new tint right on top of the original factory tint. It will end up being slightly darker because you already have 35% on it so you might want to pick a shade that is slightly less than you want in the end because it will be compounded on top of the already present tint.Window tinting?
You can put another layer of tint on top, but it might not come

out uniform. Any scratches and nicks will show. I would

strip off the old tint and use a darker color.
it will be cheaper for u right now if u just add a second layer of tint on the windows but in the long run it will cost u more money to repair the window motors. 2 layers of tint puts so much stress on the motor that it will cause it to go out sooner u'll find that rolling up and down the windows will be much slower then just having one layer of tint. its best that the existing film is removed and then redone with the darkness that u want.

Also, be sure when you do get the tinting done, you don't roll down your windows for at least 2-3 days afterwards as this can cause bubbles or streaks in the tint. Also, ask about how to clean the windows as I believe there are chemicals in common cleaners like Windex which are harmful to some types of tint. Good luck!Window Tinting?

im getting my windows tinted. legally in MA they can be at 35% but the guy at the tinting place says that 35% wont look that good. My question is if you go a little bit darker than the legal amount will cops often pull you over for it? is it worth the risk?Window tinting?
GO SOMEWHERE ELSE 'CAUSE THAT GUY DON'T KNOW JACK!!!

I'm a pro... I could put any percentage on my vehicle %26amp; I ALWAYS use 35%. Not only does it do a good job in cutting the heat %26amp; protecting the interior, but it is still OK to see out of at night.

I don't know why he would say it doesn't look good... it will look good on any color vehicle.

What incentive does he have in trying to get you to go over the legal limit? Does a darker tint cost more?

Anyway... yes, go darker %26amp; you will get pulled over. Cops are trained to notice these things, some cops target this type of infraction, %26amp; I just can't see it being worth the risk. Do you want to pay to have the tint done, wind up getting fined because your over the limit, %26amp; then have to take the tint off on top of it all... which will probably cost you?

Tell that guy to take a hike... he's not worth the risk.
yes they will pull you over.Window tinting?
yes they will pull you over

All you need is for one cop to pull you over, and if he thinks the tint is too dark he can ask you to remove it in front of him. Not only is this annoying and gonna make you window turn foggy from adhesive, but you might get a ticket too

If the law is 35% then you should try and stick to the law. Now I don't know how things work in MA but in Texas they give window tinters a sticker that states the job complys with state regulations. If the tinter is cool he will go ahead and place this sticker even with 25% or 15% film. Still doesn't give you a fool proof way from getting cops off your back, but it would help your situation.
Even if they won't pull you over for just that, if they pull you over for ANYthing else, then they might write you up for the tint.

    Removing it can cost you.

By the way, since when do you take the word of the salesperson SELLING you the tint by the square foot?

Pay more heed to the two pros above my answer. They have nothing to lose or gain by the advice they give.Window tinting?
In my city, the price of a ticket for obstructed vision, which is what they will write you for, is $150.00!! Probably what you'll pay where you are also. The reason cops dont like tinted windows is not because you cant see out but because they cant see in! Many cities are attempting to balance their budgets with the revenue their police departments are bringing in, and cop friends of mine tell me that quotas are a very real reality-a 10 ticket minimum per DAY is what they"re required to write to basically keep their jobs! Be careful!
I install window film in cars and homes as a side job and I have never had anyone complain about 35% on most vehicles.

The next darker step is 20% and that gets pretty dark.

On a rainy night it makes it rather hard to see out the sides.

I would stay with 35% if it were me. That is what I have no all my vehicles.
35% is fine, but if you want darker go for it. As someone said earlier, you can get a sticker :)

Technically the cops are able to pull you over, and ticket you, because it reduces their visibility of the driver.

    Most cops wont really care.

But if they're having a bad day, they'll ticket you.

I just got my windows tinted 2 weeks ago. Is there anything I should know about cleaning the windows? Is there something I should and should NOT be using when spraying the inside of the windows?Window Tinting?
warm water and dish liquid works well and is very safe. do not use alcohol or bleach products because they are oxidizers and may damage your tint. I've heard vinegar and water is a good cleaner. be very careful not to use anything abrasive like comet, softscrub, or even toothpaste as it will scratch.
Avoid window cleaners with amonia in them. Gunk makes a good cleaner for tinted windows.Window Tinting?
When I had my windows tinted, I was told not to use commercial cleaners such as Bon Ami or Windex - particularly, nothing that is ammonia based. Good old water %26amp; chamoisal was probably best!
just don't use anything abrasive, and U would be fineWindow Tinting?
I was told not to use anything with ammonia. Ours have metallic particles which could be damaged. We used to use a spray which was for plexiglas. Can't remember the name.
make sure you just used a clean grease free clothe then all is good

    Window tinting?

I want to tint the windows of my 96 coupe, and i was wondering if u have to call to make an appointment or if u can just show up and wait for it to be done. im assuming u must call first. Also, what is the average price to get two windows and the back windshield tinted? just give an estimate please. THANKS!Window tinting?
Make appt.. Probably cost About $100-$150 shop around if you not planning on keeping the car for over say 3-4 yrs get the cheapest tint they have it will last long enoughWindow tinting?
It would be best to call and make an appointment. The price would depend on what type of tint you want as there are different types. For a little more you could have them put a 6 inch wide strip across the top of the front windshield. The price would probably be between 120.00 and 200.00 depending on the quality of the tint. When you call they should be able to quote a price if you tell them the model of your car.Window tinting?
It depends on the area, if theres a certain shop call ahead and ask as far as an apointment.I was quoted from a guy 25 per window and 70 for the rear, this was with him giving him a deal because some friends of mine are his neighbors. He said usualy the small windows were like 30-35 a piece. This was in michigan, but prices could very by location.
i think it depends on where you live where im at they usually charge like 65 to 70 dollars but it depends on the percent you want

I am about to get my windows tinted on my silver toyota corolla but I am not sure if I should get 20% or 35%, I wear glasses at night because I have trouble seeing so would my tint affect that even MORE?

    thanks!Window tinting?
I have problems seeing too at night and I have 20% tint on my car and I have no problems seeing through the tint. 20% tint is dark but u can still see out at night
Tinted windows are great for drive-by shootings.Window tinting?
You will be fine with the darker tint. I wear glasses and have poor night vision myself. The headlights of cars are easily visible. Black that Corolla Out.
If i were you i would get a 15% tint! If you vision is not that good to begin with you want to have your windows as clear as possible.Window tinting?
Yes..Mine are 20% light in front and 5% in back..Try going 70% in front. Because for me ..its hard at night to see through the side mirrors and i have perfect vision
not sure about the glasses + tint, but it seems to me that the company could let you look through some of their tinted windows at night, so you could see for yourself.

in some states there is a limit as to how dark the tint can be. it would be good to be very sure that what you want is legal in whatever jurisdictions you drive through.
I have 15% on my Civic and that's more than enough light to see outside... Just keep in mind that if your interior is a dark color, it will look pitch black in there at night.... You'll be ok with 20% though.
Yes. I was told the lower the number the higher the tint. So you would want 30 to 35%. This may want to be verified at the place that does the service for you.
well it depends, but what kind of glasses do you wear? sun or regular? if sun then YES you wont be able to see unl;ess you roll, down the windows. but if theyare regular then no cuz i got tints and i wear my reg glasses,
no because the tints would be put in your side windows i dont think it would affect u
I would suggest that you go with 20% because you might just forget your glasses one night and trying to see objects through the tint would make it more difficult. why don't you try a shiny silver tint that matches your car and it isn't as dark as the dark tint.

    Window tinting?

I would like to get my windows tinted in my Grand Am sedan, i've been lookin at different tints 35% is way to light and 20% is to dark is there a 25% or 30%? Does anyone have pictures that compare the different tints? Anything would help!Window tinting?
check the LLumar web site........lifetime warranty.. go to a llumar dealer and the have sample on windows...also the interior of car will affect how dark it looks from outside....Window tinting?
35 is legal for the front windows, but you should do 20 in the back. You will enjoy it much more during the summer months. be sure to opt for a lifetime warranty tint, its usually a difference of $20. Its worth it!

What is the average income a peson can make per week in doing window tinting any/all info would be greatWindow tinting?
This is a complex question. If you work for a window film installation company your pay would be based upon your skill level and the volume of cars that the dealers does. If you own your own shop you need to factor in the cost of operating at a profit. Do you tint from your own truck or car, mobile tinting?

Too many factors and not enough details. BUT a good tinter can sustain a reasonably good income level. Empasis on the GOOD part! Check http://www.tintdude.com for tips.

    Window tinting???

Hey everyone is window tinting hard?? if yes pliz tell me why. im wondering if i should buy tints at autozone or take it to a tinting shop????Window tinting???
As previously noted it really is hard or easier depending on your car.

No matter what take it to a professional shop. It will take an hour or so, cost you less than $200 and it will likely be done flawlessly.

They are experts because they do it every day 7 times a day. .

Use a great car film like LLumar or FormulaOne find them at http://www.llumar.com or http://www.formulaone.comWindow tinting???
it really depends what kind of car you are installing the tint on. trucks are easy. but cars hard. i would take it to a tinting shop. Also you might get a warranty just incase the tint fades or peels off. so go with tint shops.Window tinting???
It's not hard, but it's not easy. You need to make sure your windows are spotless clean. Once you clean them, don't even think about touching them with your bare hands. The #1 reason window tints go bad is bad prep work.

When you go to a tint shop, you know the guy in the back has done it a few hundred times and knows all the little tricks to make the job look clean and make it last a long time. Some shops offer life time warranty's on the tint against fading, peeling, bubbling, and cracking. Those are the shops you want to use.

If your tinting the back window(s) of a pick up truck, go ahead and try it your self. If it's going in a car, spend a few bucks and take it to a good shop
