According to the yahoo dictionary the definition of tint is: "A gradation of a color made by adding white to it to lessen its saturation." The definition of shade is: "Cover or shelter provided by interception by an object of the sun or its rays." When you get your windows tinted you get them darker, so why is it called window tinting and not shading when tinting means to lighten and shade means to darken?|||Golly gee, Yahoo Dictionary is wrong????
In any case, the definition you are quoting has to do with paint, but glass is dealing with light so if a filter is put up the amount of filtering done depends on its tint - not adding white but adding more color to make it more saturated.
Most people consider shade to the the result of opaque action or drawing with charcoal or pencil.
I suspect the people who created tinted windows for original equipment were thinking of that since the color gradually changes from dark at the top to lighter below., although the plastic film applied all over the windows is a uniform dark.
